How do you honour your Sacred Self?

Sisters, I want to talk to you about something that is life-altering and empowering, and admittedly also challenging.

That something is how you can come to embody the Divine Feminine, the sacred self that dwells within you and that is yearning to be released to the world. It is about awakening to your Divine nature.

What if your emotional issues about your body, food, intimacy, and relationships are the result of you disconnecting from your own body?

This is a question every woman needs to ask herself.

Your body is the embodiment of the Divine Feminine, but unless you truly experience and embrace this truth with your entire being, you will not reap the rewards of its wisdom, strength, and power.

Once you do become aware of these special sacred gifts of the Divine Feminine, you will have the ability to connect with Her, your inner goddess.

 You will not be able to completely enjoy or immerse yourself in Her gifts unless you learn how to honor yourself, because when you honor yourself, you also honor the Goddess.

Does all of this sound like a tall order? How can you achieve embodiment of the Divine Feminine?

Know that it is completely within your power and strength to meet this innate wisdom that lives in you. You already possess everything you need to embody the Divine Feminine.

You may not realize it; you may not have identified or tapped into your powers yet. That’s okay. There are clear ways you can make all of this happen for you in a safe, comfortable, and healthy way.

You need to learn how to have a relationship with your body, and that process can begin by your getting in touch with and indulging in each of your senses—sight, sound, touch, hearing, taste--nurturing your body, and coming to understand your desires and then claim them. For some of you, this may be a frightening thought, but you are not alone in these thoughts.

 Draw on the energy of your sisters and the collected consciousness of the Divine Feminine within you and women everywhere and let the journey begin!
Connect, Nurture, Embody. The journey to embodiment and honoring your body, mind, and spirit begins with immersing yourself in your senses. You are, in a way, making friends with yourself, learning to love yourself, and in the process, becoming one with your Divine Feminine self. Here are some suggestions on how to connect with, nurture, and embody your Sacred self.

Listen to your voice. Silence the other voices in your head from friends, lovers, family, coworkers, and neighbors. In that silence—whether you choose to meditate, do journaling, take a walk in nature, or simply find a quiet spot where you can be alone with your thoughts for a while—identify your needs, desires, dreams, and feelings. Give voice to them. Say them aloud, write them down, sing them, dance them, chant them. Make them resonate through your entire being. When you put them out into the Universe, they become the embodiment of your inner spirit.

Taste the joy. If you are like many of your sisters, your relationship with food has been challenging. You may overeat, under eat, count every calorie, stress over every pound gained or lost, or define yourself by your dress size. You may be stuffing down trauma, fears, and inner hungers that cannot be met with food because they are not about food. Food is not the problem. You are not the problem.

Food is sacred nourishment for your body, mind, and spirit. When you connect with the Divine Feminine that resides within you and identify what you are truly hungry for, then you will taste the joy of your divine power and wisdom in the world. Then your relationship with food will blossom into the healthful, spirit- and life-supporting purpose for which it is here.

Smell/breathe the essence of life. Our sense of smell can be viewed in two ways. When we breathe in, we smell the essence of the environment around us, including the aromas of Nature and our bodily fragrances. Smell is also about taking in prana, the life-giving force or vital energy. Sisters, you are encouraged to take time every day to sit quietly, meditate, and breathe. Meditation that focuses on breath can be your entry into reconnecting with your Divine Feminine self and your sisters everywhere. The practice of meditation is both highly personal and your connection with universal consciousness. 

Touch yourself and be touched. Touch is perhaps the most important of all the senses. It is a fundamental part of our daily life experience; it influences who we love, what we buy, how we move, what we eat, how we socialize, and how we heal. It is critical for us to be able to touch ourselves with confidence, love, and compassion before we can allow others to do the same.

It is vital to feel safe and comfortable in allowing other to cross the boundaries you have put up around your body. Discovering yourself and to be comfortable with your own touch is essential. You also will decide who, when, and how to be touched in friendly, loving, and sexual ways and when it is appropriate for people to cross any boundaries you have established. Only you can make that decision!

All of these ways of handling the sense of touch are a huge step and a necessary one as you embrace your Divine Feminine.

One way to reconnect with yourself and your sense of touch is through movement.

When we move in joyful ways, we become more aware of our body. Dance, yoga, and exercises and sports you enjoy can all be windows to more comfortable self-touching and allowing others to touch you in ways that make you feel loved, cherished, and safe.
Look at yourself. Our society tells us we are not good enough: we should be thinner, prettier, have longer legs, a smaller nose, flatter stomach, better cheek bones. Banish these negative thoughts from your mind. Stand naked in front of a mirror and look at yourself. (If this is too much for you to do all at once, begin with a part of your body that you are pleased with and then shed more clothing on successive days.) Choose a part of your body that you like and express gratitude. For example: “I am thankful for my thighs; they are strong and firm.” “I am grateful for my hands; they allow me to play the piano, pick up my grandchildren, and plant my flowers.”

I particularly have such an appreciation for my hands because they help me express so much love towards myself physically and toward the one I love through touch as well as the journaling and cooking I so enjoy. Also, for the longest time, I hated my thighs, but then I realized how beautiful a woman’s shape truly is. I especially began to appreciate this beauty when I could see that my body changed through the cycles of menstruation. Rather than fight it, I started to appreciate the femininity in my tights for their beauty and for all they do to get me around—especially when I dance, which as a Latina is so culturally important to me!

When it’s time for you to address body parts that are less than pleasing to you, focus on something positive about them. The beauty is there; you simply need to open your heart and your spirit to their magnificence. Remember that every part of you is necessary for your sacred temple to exist.

My dream for all women is for them to come back to their temple body, to reclaim the parts they have disowned and hated, to banish shame and guilt, and to honor and cherish the goddess that dwells within.
